Gujarat Copper Project(GCP) at Bharuch, Gujarat

Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) has acquired the plant and machinery including lease hold land of Jhagadia Copper Ltd. (JCL) from ARCIL in June 2015 and renamed it as Gujarat Copper Project. The factory is situated at Plot No. 747, Jhagadia Industrial Estate, District - Bharuch, Gujarat. GCP plant is a secondary Copper Smelter and Refinery complex. It is capable of producing 50,000 tpa of copper cathodes conforming to LME-A grade. The plant was setup in technical collaboration with Outokumpu Technology AB (formerly Boliden Contech AB), Sweden. It was based on modern and proven technology that is capable of processing a wide array of copper bearing materials including e-scrap to produce LME-A grade copper cathode.

Smelter: Top Blown Rotary Converter (TBRC) process using Kaldo furnace from M/s Boliden contech AB, Sweden  

Refinery: ISA Process from M/s Xtrata, Australia 

Brief History:

Jhagadia Copper Limited (JCL) was promoted by Khaitan Group of Shalimar Wires Industries (SWIL) and planned to set up a secondary copper smelter in Bharuch in 1992. The project was commissioned in 2003 and the commercial production commenced from May 15, 2006. However, operations of the company were suspended from September 2009 due to lack of working capital.

Facilities:

Smelting and refinery facilities are located in one corner with central utility services and R&D is located at the edge of the plant close the middle of the plot. Hardly 40% of the 75-acre plot is utilized and big chunks of area left for future plants. The effluent treatment plant, water storage etc are on the north east end of the plot. Adequate storage is provided for temporary storage of waste products and hazardous waste.
